I hope the information assists in the planning of your perfect holiday. Please select the area then the country you would like to visit. Main Index All Countries Northern Europe and Russia: Estonia TallinnA lovely city with the main feature Old Town. Its almost like going back in time, one can wander the narrow cobbled street for hours.
They do have a Tallinn Card and Hop On Hop Off Bus. Whilst the bus will show areas outside of the center, I did not find them of great interest. With the Card check the inclusions as they vary on the type of card and you could end up with one that does not include the bus. Often they refer to Tallinn and other places as Hanseatic towns .. I looked up the meaning - Hanseatic pertaining to the Hanse towns, or to their confederacy. If arriving by Cruise Ship or Ferry the port is an easy walk from the Old Town. For more information visit: Tallinn Info Finland Finland Helsinki is a lovely city. Many of the main roads leading to the the busy bay area set in the Gulf of Finland.
From the waterfront in the center they have boat tours of the bay. I found this very enjoyable. A Hop On Hop Bus operates within the city, whilst interesting in parts I did not find it good value. My original plan we to visit St Petersburg. I found Rail and Tours Helsinki to St Petersburg are available. As I understand these depart at around 7:42 am with arrival in St Petersburg around 2:26 pm. They then spend a few days in St Petersburg with sightseeing. I suggest one google for information. (I should add I decided against this but it sounded good). As a city. I enjoyed it and hope to return at some time in the future. For more information visit: Helsinki Info Sweden Sweden Stockholm. It has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a mixture of old and new.
The city is a picture with its waterways, bridges and buildings. Quite compact to explore and do not miss the old town and the narrow streets. I notice they have an On Off Bus and whilst I have not been on this. the itinerary seem to take you the cities main features ... the nice thing one gets the commentary. Bit of fun. I visited the Abolute Ice Bar, I had to try it. Vodka at minus 5 deg, they give you a Coat with a hood and gloves to wear. It was a good laugh. (You need to book in advance). Cruises: Arriving on a cruise ship. The entry in to Stockholm though the islands is amazing and should not be missed. For more information visit: Stockholm Info Denmark Copenhagen Denmark. Capital City and the largest of the Scandinavian Cities.
For those (like me) who enjoy walking, then one can see the main areas on foot. My favorites are The Botanical Gardens, Rodenborg Gardens, Nyhavn, Stroget for shopping and as one walks around, the wonderful buildings and waterways. One has to see The Little Mermaid as that is Copenhagen to many people. A must is The Tivoli Gardens. It has traditional and modern technology with some fantastic rides. The traditional is also a wonder as one can sit and enjoy music of different eras and ballet ... plus the restaurants. You are sure of a great time and it opens late. For those that do not wish to walk, they have an On Off Sightseeing Bus which with the commentary is a great way to see the city - see details in the left column. Getting between the airport and the city is easy by rail/metro and only takes around 20 minutes. Cruise Ships. Check were it will berth, it can be a little out of town and may require a taxi. It was on business, the local tourist people seemed oblivious to the rain (I guess they are used to it). Took me all over town as I just got a wetter and wetter. I should add. I would like to go back at some point. when I would also like to visit Oslo. For more information visit: Bergen Info
Russia St Petersburg. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great, in the early 1700s. What an amazing place ... beyond my expectations.
A tour of at least two days is a must and still you will be rushed. The places I have listed on Info St Petersburg cover many of the main sights. Regarding the Hermitage. It has so much to see. Its a day on its own if you have time. Don't be put off by the crowd to get in, it should be ok when when inside. When I planned my visit. The original plan was to take a train from Helsinki, with a package of accommodation and sightseeing. I then saw a cruise visiting for two days and decided on it. Sightseeing. On the net, I found many sightseeing companies. Importantly they offered tours that did not require a visa. Price wise, they seemed similar and in the end I selected DeRus Ltd who were exceptional. But please I do not have a comparison as I have not used others.
Visas. One can not travel in Russia without having some form of visa. A visa is quite expensive, but when you purchase a set tour a visa may not be required. By taking a tour the saving of the visa cost can be a big percentage of the cost of the complete tour. I guess St Petersburg can be an expensive city to visit .. but it is worth the time and cost.
