Venice Italy St Marks Square

Venice. A wonderful place that everyone visit, every turn has a surprise with the waterways, squares, bridges and walkways.

The best way to see the city is to walk, with a map and guide book ... then you see the narrow walkways, squares and cross the narrow bridges ... facinating.

Sightseeing Venice

These are a selection of the sights that you can visit:

Saint Mark's Square - Piazza San Marco
This a great place to start with The Doge's Palace, Basilica of San Marco, Campanile, or Bell Tower and the oppertunity to sit is cafe*, with fine music and watch the world go past.

*To sit in a Cafe on St Marks with the music is a thrill. But be sure to check for any cover change.

Doge's Palace Venice ItalyThe Doge's Palace - Palazzo Ducale
An impressive building. When you enter you pass in to the inner courtyard with stairways leading off that take you through the many rooms of the palace, also over the famous Bridge of Sighs to the cells.

Venice Basilica St MarksSt. Mark’s Basilica - Basilica di San Marco
San Marco. A magnificent building with the famous three bronze horses, lavish mosaics, and the Byzantine Gothic architecture. Entry is free for the main church.

Campanile - Bell Tower
If you would like a good view of Venice they have a lift to the top of the Companile. You also see the bells.

Following St Marks Square ... it's a nice stroll through the back ways to The Rialto Bridge.

Rialto Bridge VeniceRialto Bridge - Ponte di Rialto
They started to build the bridge in1588, it was completed three years later. At one time the only crossing over the Grand Canal it has a long and interesting history. A busy area with many shops, restaurants and you have the Rialto Market.

The Grand Canal
This winds in a letter S, between St Marks Square and Piazzale Roma, and the Railway Station. We suggest you take the Vaporetto - Water Bus. They operate all day and evening. You have the opertunity to see the Grand Canal as it lives, its daily life as the locals means of transport. At times it can be very busy.

Gondola Ride
What could be more romanic ... if it's your wish, then you should do it. Just a thought, I would take a Gondola on the Grand Canal, as with the small waterways, they often follow each other and you have people looking down at you from the small bridges and walkways. They can be expensive then again ... its once in a lifetime.

My Perfect Day
Above are just a few of the wonders of Venice, they should not be missed. But for me a perfect day would be to ride the Vaporetto - Water Bus, get off at any stop and walk the back streets, or walk along the waterfront at Canale Della Giudecca or Canale Des Marco. With a map and guide book.

Skip the Line - Doge's Palace
In the busy period, you can get long lines for The Doge's Palace. We suggest you book online in advance, with a set time. Then you just go to the front of the line at that time ... no waiting - View Details -

Organised Sightseeing
Many people prefer organised sightseeing with a guide. It means you will not miss things, and also provides the history with the narrative. To the right we have listed sightseeing that can be arranged in advance.

How long should one stay in Venice, depends on your interests and the time you have available. For me, I suggest at least four days, then you have time to also visit some of the islands the Lido for the beach. However my last visit was on a ship, just 2 days when we saw a lot ... see Video.

Were to stay. This is a personal choice, but you should consider, getting to and from the hotel once in Venice, they have no roads.

If you arrive by Rail or Bus you will be in Piazzale Roma area - you can take a Vaporetto and then walk to to your hotel.

Treviso Airport has a bus from the Airport to Piazale Roma. Marco Polo Airport offers a choice. Water Taxi to closest place for your hotel (Could be Euro100 or more), Alilaguna Ferry to a number of places in Venice - see details -. Coach or Bus to Piazzale Roma.

With most it will require you to carry or pull you baggage.

On a Cruise

The Cruise Terminal is close to Piazzale Roma. From the Terminal they have a 'People Mover'. So it's easy to walk from the ship, get the mover and then use the Vaporetto.

Just a word of warning it does not run very late in the evening.

My Travels Neil Walker - View All

It's not possible to decribe Venice ... unlike any other place in the world, I fell in love with it way back.

For me, it generates excitment, just walking and explore the walkways or riding the Vaporetto, mixing with the locals.

At the same time its history is facinating with the squares and buildings to see and enjoy.

One little piece of advise however, when planning your hotel, be sure you check, how you get to it ... luggage can be a problem.
