St Peters Vatican Rome

Rome. Capital city of Italy and home to Vatican City ... The Eternal City

As you sightsee in Rome you can only marvel at the wonders it has to show you with history over 2700 years,

Rome together with the Vatican has so much to offer. One should plan in advance so you you don't miss its many wonders.

Naturally, it has many sightseeing ours available by coach (see the column on the right) to take you to the many sights. For sightseeing in the city centre however, we suggest the Hop On Hop Bus as this provides a commentary, plus you can spend as long as you wish at each destination.

For me (I like walking) I have a guide book and map, then walk and have the chance to explore the small back ways between the wonderful sights.

Sightseeing Rome

Vatican City

St Peters Bacilica
Truly impressive. The largest church in the world, it's Nave is 218 meter long. The dome is the world's largest measuring 42m in diameter and reaching 138 meter high. The interior, which includes 45 altars.

Some of the most important works in the church are the Pietà by Michelangelo, the papal altar by Bernini, the Throne of St. Peter - also by Bernini - and the Monument to the Stuarts by Canova.

It can be visited free although a strict dress code is enforced.

Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel
Truly wonderful with so much to see, its highlights being Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.

Give yourself plenty of time as the Museum has four color-coded itineraries that range from 1.5 hours to more than 5 hours.

Suggestion: They can get long lines waiting entrance. You can book entrance to the Vatican Museum in advance, with a set time. We suggest this, you can then go to the front of the line at your set time for entrance.

Rome

Colosseum , Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

These line alongside each other, when visiting one you can walk between them.

RomeColosseum
An amazing sight even though it has fallen in to ruins. Dating back to AD80, it's difficult to imagine they had the skills to build it such an imposing structure.

Palatine Hill
Has many ruins from ancient palaces and other buildings. Gardens and The Palatine Antiquarium Museum. You have steps down to The Roman Forum.

Roman Forum
It's good to have a guide book or plan, try to imagine the Roman Empire as you see famous ruins of Rosta, Temple of Saturn, Temple of Vespasian and Titus, Temple of Antoninus and Faustina and more. On my last visit (2011), they had opened the Temple of Romulus, built in the 4th century AD.

Note: The ticket for entry to the Colosseum always provides entry to Palatine Hill and The Roman Forum.

Pantheon

This should not be missed. Built over 1800 years ago. It still stands today. Around 43 meters high with a large dome and only one light source the Oculus.

Trevi Fountain RomeTrevi Fountain
Created by Nicola Salvi in 1732 under a commission by Pope Clement XII. It a lovely sight either in the day or evening.

Remember. Legend has it, you will return to Rome, if you throw a coin into the water. Throw it over your shoulder with your back to the fountain.

Piazza Navona Rome ItalyPiazza Navona
The Piazza Navona in the historic centre of Rome, It is one of Rome's liveliest squares, with many outdoor cafes, restaurants and night clubs in the neighbourhood. It's also just a short stroll to the Pantheon.

The square is built in a long oval shape, its Domitian's stadium, built by emperor Domitian in 86 AD. A lovely place with three fountains. Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi the central and largest fountain, Fontana di Nettuno (Neptune fountain) at the northern end and the Fontana del Moro (Moor fountain) at the southern end. Its overlooks by the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone

Spanish Steps Rome ItalySpanish Steps
At the foot of the Spanish Steps is the Fontana della Barcaccia, a fountain Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The design, a small boat, inspired by the flooding of the Tevere in 1598. You climb to The Trinità dei Monta beautiful French church and fine views over Rome.

These are just a part of the 'Things to See' in Rome. Suggest one gets a book or Google's Rome on the Internet for detailed information on the city and surroundings ... its a wonderful city.
