Naples Italy ... Napoli An exciting city, gateway to beautiful areas of Italy

Naples in Southern Italy, A costal city in one of the most beautiful bays in Italy ... the Bay of Naples. Approximately two hours south of Rome.

A vibrant city with winding streets, good shopping, historical sights and museums. It's also a gateway to Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.

Visiting Naples should be planned in advance ... with so much to see and explore, one could easily spend four or five days in and around the city.

Naples can be referred to as noisy, chaotic, vibrant and elegant also dirty. But though this may be true, for me, it's exciting and unforgettable.

You should Eat a Pisa when in Naples ... Pizza is Neapolitan with the genuine recipe.

The third most-populated city in Italy, for me 'raw and exciting' with citizens proud of the city.

Sightseeing

Hop On Hop Off Bus
A great way to see the city with the advantage of a commentary. They have 4 routes, one ticket for up to 3 routes (Line C had been temporarily suspended however, so please check). You are able to hop on hop off as you wish. - View Information -

Naples National Archaeological Museum
It has a collection of Ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman artifacts, these including most of the pieces found in Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. If you plan to visit Pompeii then this is a must. - View Website -

Royal Palace NaplesThe Royal Palace of Naples
17th century Renaissance style . Visit the Royal Apartments, Royal Chapel, park and the little theatre.

Naples Castle dell OvoCastel dell’Ovo ( Egg’s castle)
You get to walk up its narrow road to a terrace with views over the Bay of Naples. The legend the poet Virgil had hidden an egg in the castle, the fate of which would parallel the fate of Naples, itself. As long as the egg remained intact, the city would be spared destruction. Thus the unusual name, the Castel dell'Ovo, or "Egg Castle".

Casile Nuovo NaplesCastel Nuovo
Constructed in 1279-1282 for Charles I d’Anjou. It dominates the waterfront. The castle overlooks the bay with five towers. Its facade (facing inland) an example of early Renaissance architecture.

Naples Underground - Napoli Sotterranea
35m below the street, tunnels, aqueducts and chambers date back to the dawn of the Greek city of Neapolis in the fourth century BC.

Naples Center and Historic Center
Naples is best explored on foot, then Naples reveals its true self. Suggest you get a map and explore. The Historic Centre has been listed by UNESCO.

Sightseeing out of Naples

PompeiiPompeii
Pompeii, Italy's most famous archaeological site is a must see. It's hard to believe that in the year 79 A.D. life stopped due to the devastating eruption of Vesuvius. It provided an insight in to the advanced way of Roman life over 2000 years ago. Better to view with a guide or if not a guide book and map - see more -

CapriIsland of Capri
A beautiful island with much to explore. Arriving by ferry at Marina Grande, you have the Funicular railway to the town or a walking path. The town has wonderful views and narrow street to wander. Capri has much to enjoy with Mount Solaro - Cetrella 589m above the sea (it has a chairlift), Blue Grotto, Historic center of Anacapri, Villa Jovis - Mount Tiberio and many walks.

Amalphi Coast
The Amalfi Coast was declared A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Amalfi Coast has seaside town along the steep cliffs that run down to the sea. The coastal road drive being one the Europe's most beautiful. Some of the more popular towns are Capri, Positano, Ravello, Amalfi and Sorrento.

We hope this gives a good overview of many of the sights to see, in and around Naples ... depending on your interest their are others.

Planning to visit Pompeii or Capri on your own:

Pompeii
From Naples Napoli Garibaldi Station, you can take the Circumvesuviana Train to Pompeii and on to Sorrento. It's a cheap, safe and frequent service. It should cost around €1,80 to €3,20. Get off at "Pompeii Scavi". Pompeii is about 50m away from the station.

Capri
Its easy to take a ferry (Hydrofoil 40 minutes) from the waterfront (just along from the cruise ship terminal) to Capri. The cost is about €17 each way with regular departures.

A suggestion on your own for a few days:

1: Take a Hydrofoil from Naples to Capri - Spend 1 or 2 nights
2. Take a Hydrofoil from Capri to Sorrento - Spend a few days
3. Take a Train Sorrento to Pompeii - Visit Pompeii - Take a Train Pompeii to Naples.

On a Cruise

As most cruise ships only stay in Naples for one day, its not possible to see everything in Naples and get to see the wonders around the city.

If you plan to visit Pompeii or Capri, suggest you plan your time, what you would like to see, in the limited time you will have available. A good thing the ships berth close to the city.

Getting Around Naples

Air: Aeroporto di Napoli (Naples Airport) 5.9 miles north east of the city. Flights are available mainly from European Cities. - View Airport -

Ferries: Many ferries are available to Capri and Amalphi Coast.

Rail: The rail service is available to Rome and along the Amalphi Coast.

Cruises: Many cruise ships call in to Naples. The berth is quite close to the main city and a nice walk to the centre.

My Travels Neil Walker - View All
I find Naples raw and exciting ... it has a feeling of adventure with lots to explore.

To see the city area I would walk the centre area, then use the Hop On Hop Off Bus for the remainder ... the bus pass is one day, so plan to make the most pf this.

Pompeii is a must, but needs to be seen with a guide or a good guidebook. I would take the train out to Pompeii as it's close to the station.

Capri is a lovely day ... easy to arrange the Hydrofoil to the island, though I would suggest an overnight, giving you time to see more.
