Santorini, a volcanic island is the crescent shaped remnant of a volcano, offering spectacular views. With black sandy beaches, the towns of Oia and Fira which seem to hang off the cliffs and unforgettable outlooks and sunsets ... and more.

Sightseeing Santorini

We have not listed any set sightseeing as Santorini is easy to explore on one's own. Use the local bus service from the main town of Fira to the various parts of the island.

Most of the tourists stay in and around Fira (Thira Phira) which is central and offer a fine selection on Tavernas for a relaxing drink and meals.

Must see's are Oia situated on the northern side of the island (about 11 km from Fira) and perched on the cliffs. In the other direction (South) you have Akrotiri. Known as "Ancient Pompei" an ancient Minoan City destroyed by a volcano in 1522 BC.

Akrotiri at this time (June 2011) is closed due to part of the roof falling in. One should chck before visiting if open.

A must see is Ancient Thira. Located on a high rocky headland Mesa Vouna, with spectacular views to the sea.

Worth the climb. Thira was inhabited by the Dorians, in the 9th century BC. Later occupied in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. Most of the buildings that survive today date from the Hellenistic era (around the 4th century BC).

Not easy to reach without your own transport, it has a long winding road for the first part then a walk to the top.

If you have a brief stay we would suggest you hire a Car for the day. Inexpensive for 3 or 4 people ..... view at Santorini Car Hire. I's a great way to see a lot in a short time.

Getting Around the Islands - Santorini

Air: Santorini Airport can be reached from the international airports Athens and Thessaloniki. In the summer months charter flights are also available from many european cities.

Ferry: The ferries from Piraeus or other islands, dock in Athinios port.

Cruises Ships: Anchor and use tenders. You can then either walk up the winding pathway, ride a donkey or take the cable car to the cliff top. It's then just a short walk in to Fira.

Santorini is amazing as it stands out from the blue waters of the Aegean ... an amazing sight from the ocean.

Easy to explore by local bus from Fira one should visit both ends of the island and the beaches .. for a short stay however a car for the day will give you time to explore in full.

For me however Ancient Thira is a must.
