The capital and main gateway to Greece, Athens, provides the perfect start to a visit.

Athens and the coast around offers an adventure on its own.

Close to Athens you have Piraeus with ferries to the Greek Islands of the the Aegean.

Sightseeing Greece

Tours are available to show you Athens, also to many places of interest in Greece and the Islands. These are excellent if you have limited time.

To see the real Greece however, you are better with a guidebook, map, some planning then take a ferry and explore.

For those that wish to relax, sit on a beach, then the various islands have it all, be it a quiet stay, or one with wild nightlife.

Many of the islands have airports for those that prefer to fly.

Getting Around the Islands

Air: Athens Airport is located just outside of Athens and near Piraeus. It has a train to the city and Taxis.

Ferry: Piraeus has ferries to most of the main islands. It is easy to reach from either Athens or the Airport.

Cruises Ships: These anchor in the Port of Piraeus. For those joining a ship, a taxi may be the best means of transport as you will have baggage. It is walk, with roads to cross in Piraeus if you use the train.

Even though I have visited Athens many times. Its still a joy to spend a few days exploring and seeing the old and changes that take place.

To explore the islands. I suggest you need to plan ... but make plans that can be changed. You never know what you will find along the way.

If you are staying in the Cyclades, suggest you use the ferries. But if going further, say to the Dodecanese Islands. Then maybe a flight one way is a good idea.

Only warning. If you are visiting the more popular islands in the peak seasons, they can become fully booked so book in advance.
