A University Town with a delightful charm A lovely city to explore with easy walking. Except the Castle, set around 300 feet above the city. To reach the castle, you can take a Funicular. Funicular: Walk to the Kornmarkt. From here, you take the Bergbahn up to the first stop, the castle. Sightseeing Heidelberg Heidelberg Castle High above the city the castle has elements of Gothic and the Renaissance periods. From the castle you have fine views over the city and river, visit the the castle gardens, The Great Vat (large wine barrel) and the Pharmacy Museum. The Old Bridge Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) built around 1786, On the town side you have a medieval bridge gate, originally part of the town wall. The Old Town A good starting point for your exploration would be Markplatz. The Market Square in Heidelberg is filled with activity. The heart of the Altstadt, the square is bordered by the Church of the Holy Ghost on one side and the Town Hall on the other. Walk down the pedestrianised Hauptstrasse (high street). Getting Around Heidelberg Car: If touring this is a interesting stop for a couple of days.. River Cruises: Some of the River Cruise dock in Miltenberg on the Main River with a tour to Heidelberg. It is not not walking distance. If you dock in Miltenberg its a very nice small town on the hill and worth a walking tour if the boat gives you time.
